Dollar ReDe$ign Project

It's Time to ReBrand the Buck

Jennifer Kabat : Frieze Magazine : Comment : The Buck Stops Here

Nothing more than a promise.

Journalist, consultant, curator Jennifer Kabat gives the Dollar ReDe$ign Project a run for its money in Frieze magazine: "Money might be best described by Jean Baudrillard’s fabricated quotation from Ecclesiastes: ‘The simulacrum is true.’ In modern times, money’s material value is disconnected from its assumed value; it is basically nothing more than a promise. Rather than being backed by either silver or gold, it is based on confidence in a certain institution – in the Federal Reserve, in the case of the US, or the Bank of England, in the case of the UK. In an era of bailouts and the euphemistic ‘quantitative easing’, both institutions are more than a little precarious." Read full article here ... http://tinyurl.com/naw233

"My idea was simple. I kept with the tradition of symbolizing the US Treasury by leaving Washington on the $1 bill. Instead of woven paper, my concept would use polymer material, which is longer lasting. The colors are based on the colors of our country – blue from the color of the flag for instance. The neon green represents a hologram look similar to that used on Canadian Dollars which I believe can not be counter-fitted."

Some 'Independent' Financial Advice for G8 Leaders

The Days of Recklessness Must End.

As Italy plays host to the worlds most powerful leaders at this year's G8 summit in L'Aquila, 'high on the agenda will be a redesign of the rules under which the global economy functions in order to prevent a repeat of last autumn's financial meltdown. Russia and China have signaled their intention to push for an agreement on an alternative to the Dollar as a global reserve currency, as their fears grow that their vast accumulations of US assets are at risk of losing value. In such discussions America might well raise its long-standing complaint about China's policy of manipulating its currency to keep its exports cheap, something which played a key role in destabilizing the global economy. However, it's very unlikely that there will be a dramatic announcement on either of these two fiendishly complex and politically sensitive issues at the end of the summit. But it is right that they are, finally, being discussed at such meetings. Talks on a new global regulatory framework for banks might be more fruitful given that most of the governments represented have been badly scarred by the implosion of their financial sectors. There is already a general agreement that commercial banks need to be forced to hold more capital in good times to prevent them from needing costly public bailouts in the bad. A commitment from the G8 to require their domestic banks to do so would send a useful signal to the global financial community that the days of recklessness must end. But this must not be another G8 meeting of broken promises. If the name of L'Aquila is to be associated with something other than a natural disaster, these leaders need to deliver more than another communique of warm words and good intentions.'

Fighting the Economic Crisis : A New Dollar

Richard Smith has a dream:  Reboot the American economy and lift it out of the current global financial crisis.

"Smith is the creator of 'The Dollar Redesign Project', an initiative that proposes to rebuild the American financial system through re-branding and redesigning the Dollar bill. According to Smith, to get the US out of recession and restart the economy, the only solution possible is a deep reform of the current financial system, starting at its foundation: its money. 'It means starting from scratch,' explains Smith' 'a banknote is highly symbolic, it represents the essence of the economy, as well as the vision, values and heritage of a nation. That's why redesigning the Dollar will give it new meaning and is the key to getting our country out of this mess.' The Dollar hasn't been redesigned since the 30s. The project launched on Smith's blog has received the approval of designers and idealists from all over the world, each of whom have sent in, via the web, their own proposals. The portraits of Franklin and Washington have been replaced by icons closer to our times, such as Barbie and Michael Jackson, and the traditional green of the Dollar bill has been replaced with new futuristic styles. 'Even if most of our supporters are originally from the US we've also received ideas and proposals from all over the world including South America, the UK and Russia.' And to show that he's serious Smith has also launched an online petition (http://www.DollarRedesign.com/petition) that hopes to collect the necessary signatures to present his proposal to the White House. 'I've been trying for weeks to make contact with President Obama and his administration,' confesses Smith, 'but so far I've had no reply.' In the meantime, while waiting for a reaction, Smith is now planning to take his project to all the schools and colleges in the US, to make the 'Dollar Redesign Project' a nationwide competition. Not only that Smith also has two other projects in the pipeline to improve the quality of life of his fellow-Americans: 'Ban The Bag' and 'Walk Don't Walk'."

Money is Just an Illusion : Colors Magazine

According to the ‘Money’ issue of Colors magazine (#73), ‘money is just an illusion, a psychological relationship between an object and a value that has been given to it.’ So to try and put some meat around their idea they ran a few lab tests and found traces of ‘certain substances.’ They then decided to make each section of the magazine correspond to one of them. The sections included 'stories’ around various materials including silicate, oil, feces, ink and ash, and the ‘purpose’ of this issue was to ‘highlight the myriad contradictions embodied in the all-embracing role money has come to play in modern society.’

Additionally, ‘Fabrica, the Benetton communication research center which publishes Colors, was invited by the cultural space Carre Rotondes in Luxemburg to present an exhibition’ based on the Money issue of the magazine. ‘Through photography, creative writing, works of art and interactive installations conceived by Fabrica artists, the exhibition (Colors of Money) provides an unorthodox insight into a world seizing from a growing financial crises’ – installation images shown – ‘the exhibition simultaneously underlines the innovative response of social groups to the cultural dominance of finance, thus making a subject often considered as incomprehensible more accessible to young people, finance professionals and the general public.’

In Ithaca We Trust : Time vs Money

As the US sits in virtual Chapter 11 bankruptcy, people everywhere are turning to alternative ways to make ends meet. In Ithaca, NY, the local community has adopted ‘Ithaca Hours’ (http://www.ithacahours.org) as a ‘local currency system that promotes local economic strength and community self-reliance.’ As the Hours Board of Directors explain, ‘Ithaca Hours help to keep money local, building the Ithaca economy. It also builds community pride and connections.’ Several local businesses now ‘accept Ithaca HOURS for goods and services,’ as well as ‘several local employers and employees’ too, ‘who have agreed to pay or receive partial wages in Ithaca Hours’ even.

The ‘currency’ is based on the idea that YOUR ‘time’ actually has a monetary value, so you can ‘trade’ time instead of actual ‘capital.’ But ‘ unlike (conventional) US Dollars, when you spend an HOUR you know it is going to stay in your community, keep circulating, supporting your economy and maybe even end up right back in your pocket. And also unlike (standard) US Dollars this is your system.’

Finally, the revolution is getting organized!

Currency : A Usability Study : Another 'Kick' in the Teeth for Bill

Is our currency really that practical? Not only is the design ‘ancient’ in its ‘look and feel,’ a recent ‘study’ (http://tinyurl.com/lfww7j) claims that it’s also not very easy to use. Uselog.com, the product usability weblog, compares the US currency with some other currencies from around the world and concludes that, sadly, the problem lies in the fact that ‘there’s really no incentive’ to make the US currency more practical because people ‘have no alternative.’ Clearly, the Federal Reserve’s ‘monopoly’ on this situation is an out-of-order ‘kick’ in the teeth for civil liberties. In any other situation ‘the people’ would have the right to challenge such a situation, clearly it’s time for a public ‘uprising,’ it’s time for the monetary revolution to get ‘organized’ ...
